Syriae Phoeniciae urbs, Beryto vicina, in qua Adonidis templa sunt. Eam a tyranno oppressam Pompeius liberavit. Sita est in excelso quodam loco, non procul a mari. Vide plura apud Stephanum. Eius meminit Dionysius, uti videre est in his:
Οἱ τ᾿ Ι᾿όπην καὶ Γάζαν, Ε᾿λαΐδα τ᾿ ενναίουσι,
Καὶ Τύρον ὠγυγίην, Βηρντοῦ τ᾿ ἄιαν ἐραννην´,
Βύβλον τ᾿ ἀγχίαλον, καὶ Σίδονα ἀνθεμόεςςαν.
Hodie Giblee seu Gibelleto vocant. Hîc praecipuô honote Venus culta, in cuius proin honorem mulieres, sollennibus Adonidis exsequiis tonderi recusantes, eam Deae mulctam exsolvebant, ut per integrum diem in Foro ad quaestum prostarent, pudoris prostituti quaestu Deae aerario illatô. Ex eadem ςτεφανώτιδι βίβλῳ, coronaria papyro (sic enim eam appellârunt, e qua coronae factae) quum coronas petiisset Agesilaus ab Aegypti Rege, cum post res egregie ibi gestas discessurus esset, διὰ τὴν λιτότητα τῶ ςτεφάνων, propter exilitatem coronarum, contemptui fuisse Aegyptiis, notar. Sed et Isidi Aegypti Reginae ac Deae inter suos, Byblinum diademae fuisse, quod illa apud Byblum Urbem Phoeniciae, Osirin suum lugens, posuerit, legimus, apud Etymologum in voce Βύβλος. Vide Car.
